AHSTC Starter Swim

The purpose of Arbor Heights’ Starter Swim program is to provide families on the club waitlist with pre-competitive swim instruction and social opportunities to prepare young swimmers for future participation with the Arbor Heights swim team.

In Starter Swim, your swimmer will have the opportunity to learn or polish all four strokes, build endurance to swim longer distances, learn competitive swim skills such as reading the clock, circle swimming, turns, and dives, all while having fun and meeting new friends!

What Does Starter Swim Include?

Swim team activities including practices, clinics, and team-sponsored social events. Starter Swim participants are welcome to attend league swim meets, but cannot compete/swim in them due to league requirements. Here are highlights of what is included in this 9-week program:

  • Spring Practices: Weekday afternoons May 28- Jun 21  (5 days per week for age 7 and up,  T/Th only for 6 and under)
  • Red & Blue Meet Time Trials: Jun 15 (Saturday morning)
  • Team Summer Kick-off BBQ Party: Jun 21  (evening, after practices)
  • Summer Practices: Weekday mornings Jun 24 – Jul 25 (5 days per week for age 7 and up, MWF for 6 and under)
  • Team Picture Day & Pancake Breakfast: Jun 28 (morning, no practice this day)
  • Start & Turn Swim Clinics:  Jun 29  and  July 13 (Saturday mornings)
  • End of Season Party: Aug 9 (evening event)

The full season calendar is still evolving and some dates are subject to change. You can reference these team materials for more information: team spring & summer practice schedule (note, the Starter Swim program officially starts 2 weeks after regular swim team practices begin) and swim team 2024 season overview calendar.  Note, the spring is preseason and it is normal for swimmers to start late or attend only part time in the spring due to other commitments. Attending all 5 practices each week is never mandatory, even in the summer.

Starter Swim does not does not offer further opportunities for the participant or family to stay independently at Arbor Heights after practice, during open recreation swimming, or use club facilities outside designated team-sponsored events.

Participant Requirements

Starter Swim is not a substitute for swim lessons. All participants must demonstrate sufficient swim ability to ensure water safety within a large group environment. For age 6 and under this means ability to kick, with kickboard, across the dive tank and demonstrate board safety in the water; for ages 7-8 this means ability to swim crawl stroke unassisted across the width of the pool, and use a kickboard. For ages 9-12, this would be the ability to proficiently swim 25 yards of crawl stroke.

Registration

Please use this form to sign up– please understand that sign up does not guarantee registration. Registration in Starter Swim will be offered to interested families prioritized based on waitlist position, in line with the objective of our program to prepare young swimmers for future participation on the team when they become members.

Families with waitlist number 200 or lower are guaranteed a spot in Starter Swim, while families with waitlist numbers 201 and higher will be offered registration based on their waitlist position, until the program is full. (Program size will depend on overall swim team enrollment numbers- enrollment stays open until June 22 and we typically add members to the team all through the spring season. While we can’t guarantee it, our hope is to be able to accommodate all interested families on our waitlist!)

After you sign up, a link for billing will be emailed separately to you to complete your registration. The activity fee is $250 per child for participation in the full 9-week 2024 program for ages 7 and up, and $150 per child for age 6 and under (“Speedy Sixers”) who practice less frequently. Refer to the team spring & summer practice schedule for more details on when practices are held.

Registration and payment  must be completed before the participant begins attending practices.

Refund Policy

The provision of refunds to families who sign up for programs and activities is costly for AHSTC due to credit card fees and the need to pay a third-party firm to process refunds. Prorated refunds for team fees will be provided for cancellation requests made prior to June 22, less a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be provided after June 22.
